Though accounts of dolphins befriending people have traditionally been the stuff
of myths and fairytales, New Florida has discovered a real-life story
of human/dolphin interaction. Join us as we travel to the Dolphin
Research Center in the Florida Keys to see how some very special dolphins
are helping a physically challenged five-year old overcome her disabilities.
Yes, he’s African American, but no racial barrier could keep Floridian Winston
Scott from exploring the final frontier. From his early career as a naval
aviator to his thrilling turn as an astronaut aboard the Endeavour and Columbia
space shuttles, Captain Scott has set an example that any child – black,
white or brown – would do well to follow. In celebration of Black History
Month, New
Florida honors this African-American pioneer.
Miami Beach is famous not just for its beautiful beaches and exuberant nightlife,
but also for its architecture. And, as it turns out, many of the buildings
that serve as landmarks on Miami Beach were designed by a single man with a
singular vision: Lawrence
Murray Dixon. New Florida tells his story.
Florida just seems to attract odd people. (Maybe it’s the heat!) Case in
point: Dave Drimmer. He spends his days traversing Florida waters in a bizarre-looking
boat made from the hull of a DC-3 airplane. New Florida meets this eccentric
Floridian and gets a behind-the-scenes tour of his pride and joy: the Cosmic
Muffin.
Just Northwest of Gainesville, a prehistoric jungle exists 120 feet below the
earth's surface. Dubbed “the Devil’s
Millhopper,” this 500-foot wide sinkhole is a true geological oddity
because the climate inside it mimics that of a rainforest. New Florida takes
a guided tour of the Millhopper, and learns how it earned its rather ominous
sounding name.
