The Voice Box
- Ever wonder what’s on the mind of your child
or teenager? One Florida mother did, and then she invented
a way to find out. New Florida explores
the phenomenon of the Voice
Box. Now in over 100 schools, this cardboard box gets
kids to open up, and gives adults a peek at their secret
thoughts, opinions, and feelings.
Fish and Wildlife
Research Institute - New
Florida meets the caretakers of Florida’s fragile
environment at the recently-formed Fish
and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg. The
Fish and Wildlife Research Institute is made up of researchers
and scientists charged with monitoring the state's natural
resources and wildlife. Their findings are then used by lawmakers
in Tallahassee to ensure that the delicate balance between
the state's growing human population and the protection of
our wildlife, marine mammals, fisheries, and estuaries stays
in check.
Adopt-A-Road
- What does it mean to "adopt" a road, and
what would possess a person to spend his or her weekends
picking up other people’s garbage? New Florida finds
out when we meet twins Kyle & Austin Elliott and their
parents. This Palm
Beach County family has pledged to keep a mile-long stretch
of road near home litter free.

Home Movie Makers
- New Florida gets
a look through the viewfinder of the Miami Moviemakers, a
prominent amateur film club that lasted for 4 decades. These
enthusiastic filmmakers saw life as one big movie set. Now,
as that technology fades away, historians say old film reels
like these are treasures that should be preserved. After
World War II, moviemaking became affordable past times for
hobbyists, and amateur film clubs sprang up around the country.
These clubs provided a forum for movie-camera owners to learn
about the technology and hone their own skills through popular
moviemaking contests.
